Laurens 55 Graduate Named New Director of Teaching & Learning in Laurens County School District 55
August 12, 2024During the August 12, 2024, Special-Called Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) School Board Meeting, the LCSD 55 School Board unanimously voted to approve Wendy Burgess as the 2024-2025 LCSD 55 Director of Teaching and Learning Department.
Wendy Burgess is a proud graduate of Laurens 55. She was an accomplished student and is now a distinguished educator with proven leadership skills at the district and state levels.
Burgess holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Development from Lander University. She graduated Cum Laude and was honored with the Golden L Award. She earned two degrees from Clemson University. She has a Master’s Degree in Special Education with a Focus on Learning Disabilities and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Leadership. Burgess is also a National Board Certified Teacher.
Burgess has twenty-six years of experience in education. She began her career as the Facility Director of Tot Town Child Care Center in Anderson, South Carolina. She taught Early Childhood for fourteen years at Wren Elementary School in Anderson School District One. Burgess served as a Reading Specialist for four years at Marshall Primary School in Anderson School District Two before she moved to the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE). She is the team lead for the SCDE Office of Early Learning.
Burgess is an enthusiastic and dependable individual. She welcomes challenges and turns them into opportunities for success. Her expertise includes serving early childhood learners and students with learning disabilities. Her strengths include researching, analyzing data, identifying needs, and implementing best practices and curriculum.
Burgess is strong in communication and community engagement and serves as Anderson School District One Board of Trustee and Anderson County First Steps Board Director. Her track record as a school board trustee shows her commitment to supporting effective school district operations, student learning, and school renewal.

Wendy Burgess will begin serving in LCSD 55 on September 3, 2024.
