“Gnaw More” Surprises: Terminix warn homeowners of hidden dangers during 2024 Rodent Awareness Week

October 17, 2024

In alignment with Rodent Awareness Week 2024, which takes place October 20-26, Terminix Service, Inc. (TSI), the largest pest control company in the Carolinas, is committed to educating homeowners about the dangers posed by rodent infestations during the fall and winter months. Supported by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), this annual initiative highlights the risks rodents bring to homes and the health hazards they can pose to families.

“Every year as the temperatures drop, rodents seek out warmth, food, and shelter—making homes a prime target,” said Kevin Hathorne, Terminix Technical Director, BCE. “Once inside, these pests can cause significant damage, such as gnawing through drywall, insulation, and electrical wiring. The latter can lead to potential fire hazards. Additionally, rodents contaminate food and carry bacteria, fleas, ticks, and diseases like hantavirus, Salmonella, and even the plague.”

This Rodent Awareness Week, Terminix is raising awareness of the most common rodent species found in the Carolinas and nearby regions while offering tips on how homeowners can prevent infestations this fall and winter.

Common Rodents in the Region:

  • Deer Mice: Found across the U.S., deer mice often dwell in rural areas like wood piles and fence posts. Although not typically indoor pests, they can wander inside for food and warmth. Deer mice are known carriers of hantavirus, which can be fatal to humans.
  • House Mice: The most common rodent pest nationwide, house mice often nest in secluded areas of homes. They are notorious for chewing through materials like drywall and electrical wires and can spread diseases like Salmonella.
  • Norway Rats: This nocturnal species is common across the U.S. Norway rats can gnaw through rigid materials like plastic and PVC pipes and are known to spread several diseases, including the plague.
  • Roof Rats: Found primarily in coastal and southern regions of the U.S., roof rats tend to nest in trees and higher places. Like other rodents, they pose health risks by transmitting diseases and contaminating food.

Signs of Rodent Infestation:
Hathorne further explains that rodents can be detected by specific signs:

  • Droppings and Urine Stains: Look for rodent droppings in attics, soffits, and around food sources.
  • Gnaw Marks: Rodents will chew through various materials, including walls and wiring, increasing the risk of electrical fires.
  • Nests: Rodents build nests from shredded materials in dark, undisturbed areas like attics and closets.
  • Rub Marks: Rodents often leave greasy marks along walls and entry points.
  • Noises: Scurrying sounds in the walls or attic strongly indicate rodent activity.

Preventative Tips:
To help homeowners keep rodents at bay, Terminix Service, Inc. and the NPMA recommend these tips:

  • Install door sweeps and repair damaged screens
  • Seal cracks and holes on the exterior of your home
  • Screen vents and openings, including chimneys
  • Keep food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly
  • Maintain proper ventilation in attics, basements, and crawl spaces
  • Repair leaking pipes and clear clogged drains
  • Inspect food packaging for damage before bringing it into your home
  • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from your house
