The Campus Fire Marshal/Emergency Services Coordinator: Under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police, performs the duties of the Campus Fire Marshal by effectively providing technical and administrative work in developing and implementing comprehensive fire prevention programs and investigation of arson and related hate crimes. Assures University compliance with State and Federal laws regarding fire safety inspections, drills, and the public safety goals of the institution. Is also responsible for oversight of the University’s emergency preparedness, response and training in alignment with the National Incident Management System and the University’s Incident Management Plan.

• Conducts periodic fire safety inspections of existing University buildings and safety exercises related to building evacuations through semi-annual and annual evacuation drills.
• Reviews fire life safety system plans with the local AOJ on new and remodel construction.
• Ensures that all fire life safety systems are tested/inspected per N.F.P.A. 71 and 72 standards.
• Ensures all fire extinguishers are maintained, inspected, recharged and replaced as needed.
• Inspects kitchen hood fire suppression systems at least annually.
• Instructs the University community on best practices in fire safety. Makes recommendations for improvements.
• Works with the University Risk Manager to assess and mitigate risk.
• Conducts random occupancy compliance checks of indoor campus events.
• Serves as the Emergency Services Coordinator with oversight of campus emergency preparedness planning and implementation.
• Assists the Chief of Police and the Asst Chief of Police/Patrol Services in implementing the Campus Incident Management Plan.
• Manages the Building and Floor Coordinator system and maintains the inventory of Building Coordinator hand-held radios.
• Performs other related duties as needed and assigned.
• Conducts statistical research and emerging trends in life safety disciplines.
• Teaches employees and students best practices in fire safety. Manages the 800 and 400 MHz radio systems.
• Maintains Public Fire Log as required by the Jeanne Clery Act.
• Participates in committees, task forces, associations and one-on-one meetings representing the Department of Public Safety on various issues and concerns related to fire safety and other pertinent emergency service operations on campus. Confers with community members and external public safety partners dealing with developing technologies, changes in life safety system laws affecting the University and best practices in preventing hazardous conditions, fire safety issues, procedures and responses

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) and 3 years of fire marshal or fire service-related experience. Must pass a background investigation. A good driving record and valid driver’s license. A negative pre-employment drug screen is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Fire Science.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Certified as a State Fire Marshal by the South Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office or ability to become certified within one year of appointment. Maintain a valid driver’s license. Possess a working knowledge of local, state and national fire codes and criminal laws. Must have knowledge of state criminal statutes and investigative techniques regarding arson, arson related crimes and Hate Crimes. Additionally possess a working knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS). Corroborates and supports the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police and Assistant Chief of Police in implementing the Campus Incident Management Plan.

Salary: $25.00 per hour

Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 8:30 – 5:00 pm
