SCETV premieres documentary celebrating baseball legend Bobby Richardson

South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) announced it will air the premiere of Graceball: The Story of Bobby Richardson on Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. on ETV-HD.

Robert Richardson lived every post-WWII young boy’s dream. Known to friends and family as Bobby, the Christian from Sumter played second base for the New York Yankees alongside legends such as Mantle, Berra, Maris and Ford. He shined during the World Series, playing in 30 consecutive World Series games. Richardson helped the Yankees win three World Championships. He still holds the World Series record for the most runs batted in and remains the only player from a losing team to win Series MVP.

Richardson spent his free time going to church, visiting family or helping others. This strong moral character drew respect from some of his rowdier teammates who often leaned on him for support during difficult times.

After retiring from baseball early at age 31, Richardson returned to Sumter with his wife Betsy. Monuments honoring the hometown hero are displayed throughout the city. He has spent the last 58 years serving his community. Richardson coached college teams, ran for Congress, and spoke at hundreds of national and local events, including two at the White House.

Graceball: The Story of Bobby Richardson features a series of interviews recorded as far back as 1963. Baseball experts including Bob Costas, Joe Posnanski and Marty Appel, along with Richardson’s childhood friends, teammates and faith leaders share how his greatness expanded well beyond the field.

Graceball: The Story of Bobby Richardson was produced by SCETV in coordination with Susie Films with support from the Williams Brice Edwards Charitable Trust and the ETV Endowment of South Carolina.

In addition to airing on SCETV’s statewide television network, Graceball: The Story of Bobby Richardson is also being distributed nationally this spring by American Public Television (APT) to viewers of public television across the U.S. Viewers outside of South Carolina should check their local listings.
