Are you up to the sticky note challenge?
February 1, 2018By Brian Maynor
Are you living the life you want or at least making progress towards it?
Most of us have a vision of what we want our lives to be like, but with life getting in the way that vision doesn’t always become a reality. We’re so busy fighting daily fires and running from one appointment to the next that we often lose sight of our goals and stop working towards them.
The Sticky Note Challenge may not make your dream life suddenly happen, but it will be a huge boost in helping you get there.
So what is the challenge exactly and how do we take part?
1. What is it? The Sticky Note Challenge is a take on Operation Beautiful, where you post anonymous notes in public places to brighten someone’s day. Here, the challenge is to make several notes a day for ourselves, to brighten our day and help keep us motivated to make positive changes in our lives.
2. Why it works? Science has long proven that we perceive negative messages five times more powerfully than positive ones, and we know how many negative messages bombard us every day. It’s overwhelming. To counteract all of that negativity, we have to surround ourselves with positive messages, which is exactly what this challenge is about.
3. How it works? Over the next month, the challenge is to place sticky notes around your home, office, car and any other personal space where you will see them throughout your normal routine. Whether it’s in the bathroom, kitchen, in your bag or wallet, or on the back of your phone doesn’t really matter. The notes can be a single affirmation or different thoughts, quotes or reminders to help reset your intention when you read it.
4. Helpful hints. This challenge isn’t about recycling mantras or stale resolutions; it’s more personalized and focused on intentions and actionable habits that reflect your goals and ambitions. While they can be healthy lifestyle oriented, but ideally they will center on self-reflection, personal growth and reminders to pursue our larger life goals.
5. A few examples. I know getting started can often be daunting, so here are a few examples to get the ball rolling. I have no doubt once you start you’ll fill a pad of sticky notes in no time.
Nurture your dreams.
No more waiting.
Now is the time.
Stop. Breathe. Reflect.
Listen to your body.
You’ll feel better.
You will thank yourself later.
Prioritize my priorities, not everyone else’s.
It’s okay to say ‘no.’
Laugh.
Call a funny friend now!
As a child we were often taught through repetition, and for good reason. The more we do something or see something the deeper the impact and more we believe. Negativity only reinforces negativity, so we need some extra positivity to not only counter it and move our mindset into a positive space.
