BASF VETS Employee Resource Group partners with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build beds for children in need

August 15, 2024

Dozens of children in Oconee County have beds soon after an inspiring day of building done by volunteers from BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) in Seneca.

Members of the company’s Veterans Employee Team (VETS) joined over eighty volunteers with the Westminster chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit dedicated to building beds for children in need.

The massive build took place at the FARM Center in Seneca between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and more than a dozen volunteers from ECMS took part.

“This was a unique request and project for us, but one that provides so much back to our local community,” said Tommy Holland, chair of the Seneca VETS Employee Resource Group. “It was a humbling experience for us since we know there is an immediate and direct benefit.”

The Westminster chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace started in January of 2024 to help answer a need in the local community of children not having actual beds to sleep in. Families needing beds can reach them at https://shpbeds.org/chapter/sc-westminster/.

“The VETS group at BASF ECMS was amazing in answering the call,” said Kaitlyn Turner, the chapter president. “They are helping a lot of children feel more secure as we start the school year.”

The VETS team is one of the many Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that BASF ECMS creates to help bring together workers with similar interests and backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and supporting personal and professional development, said Elba Lizardi, Site Director at BASF ECMS.

“BASF ECMS believes in supporting the greater Seneca community, and these kinds of opportunities allow our ERGs to really be part of that effort,” Lizardi said.
