BE&K/Turner, Design-Builder for Boeing South Carolina 787 Expansion, Celebrates Major Safety Milestone — 3 Million Labor-Hours Worked without a Lost-Time Incident

NORTH CARLESTON, SC – March 24, 2011 – BE&K/Turner, design-builderfor the Boeing South Carolina 787 Expansion, announced today that it hasachieved a major safety milestone — 3 million labor-hours workedwithout a lost-time incident. To mark the occasion, BE&K/Turnerhosted a tradeworker appreciation luncheon. After a brief ceremony, thecrowd enjoyed a buffet lunch complete with a raffle and giveaways.
“Three-million safe labor-hours is an amazing achievement of which weare extremely proud,” said Mike Pace, BE&K/Turner’s projectdirector. “To put this into perspective, the total labor-hours worked ona typical industrial construction project rarely reaches into thehundreds of thousands, let alone the millions. And to work this manyhours safely, our subcontractors deserve a lot of credit.” Pace went onto say, “The most important takeaway is that the workers on site havebeen able to maintain their employment without losing time due toinjury. Their well-being remains our highest priority.”

Speaking to the project status, Pace noted, Construction is onschedule. Boeing will have the ability to start production of the 787aircraft this summer.”
Last week, BE&K/Turner was recognized for its outstanding safetyrecord at the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Safety Awardsluncheon. That same day (March 16), BE&K/Turner formally celebratedreaching the highest point of the Boeing South Carolina 787 deliverycenter last week. The delivery center, where the finished Boeing 787airplane will be delivered to its new owner, is a stand-alone facilityunder construction next to the final assembly building. The deliverycenter is sited in the northeast corner of the site alongside SouthAviation Boulevard.
Earlier this year, BE&K/Turner announced that it has received a 2010Boeing Performance Excellence Award. The Boeing Company issues theaward annually to recognize suppliers who have achieved superiorperformance. In addition, BE&K/Turner was named 2010 GeneralContractor of the Year by the Charleston Chapter of the AmericanSubcontractors Association of the Carolinas.

BE&K/Turner broke ground on the Boeing South Carolina 787 Expansionin November 2009, began steel erection in April 2010, set the firststeel trusses in May 2010, and formally celebrated reaching the highestpoint of the final assembly facility in September 2010.
