BJU Museum & Gallery to close for renovation
January 27, 2017Bob Jones University President Steve Pettit announced today that the Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery will close for renovation on Saturday, Feb. 18.
“The Museum & Gallery has long been an asset to the Greenville community as it has consistently promoted the arts and fostered arts education both on and off campus,” said Pettit. “During the renovation, we are excited about the opportunity to share in new ways a large number of paintings in our collection with the public—both in Greenville and around the world.”
Under the direction of M&G Director Erin Jones, the Museum & Gallery will begin to loan paintings from the collection to various museums, corporate headquarters and private homes of art enthusiasts. Paintings not placed will be in secured climate-controlled storage. With the size of M&G’s collection, it may take the remainder of 2017 to place the paintings.
While a thorough engineering analysis needs to be completed, the renovation will include work such as the installation of a new HVAC and other mechanical systems, the sealing of outside walls and the replacement of a number of interior walls. The entire project, including returning the paintings to M&G once renovations are complete, would likely set the re-opening of the Museum & Gallery in approximately two years.
Additionally, the Heritage Green satellite location in downtown Greenville will close Saturday, Feb. 4. Greenville County is seeking another tenant for the Heritage Green building.
With its commitment to arts education in the community, M&G is planning to continue providing educational services to local public schools and civic organizations through its “Museum on the Move” outreach. The Homeschool Days and Kids Create! events already scheduled will be held in other venues on the BJU campus.
