BNTD attorney Nichols honored with Matthew J. Perry Public Service Award

COLUMBIA, SC – The South Carolina Association for Justice (SCAJ) honored John Shannon Nichols of Bluestein, Nichols, Thompson, Delgado (BNTD) with its Matthew J. Perry Public Service Award at its 2014 Annual Convention on Saturday, August 9 on Hilton Head Island.
The Matthew J. Perry Public Service Award recognizes a lawyer who has made a monumental sacrifice and efforts in public service over the course of his or her career and has made a significant difference to the community with their endeavors.
Judge Perry was a key civil rights attorney in South Carolina who played a central role in integrating the state’s public schools, hospitals, golf courses, restaurants and more. In 1979, he became the state’s first African-American U.S. District Judge.
“Judge Matthew Perry fought tirelessly and successfully for the rights of citizens who needed his help the most,” said Nichols. “He is remembered for his professionalism, civility and integrity and it is a special honor to receive this award in his name.”
Nichols has spent his career going above and beyond in the service of others and advocating for fairness under the law. He is a commissioner for the South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense, a member of the South Carolina Board of Law Examiners and the South Carolina Bar Professional Responsibility Committee. He is past president and a current board member of the South Carolina Association for Justice and chairs the association’s President’s Council.
