Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital first to achieve Magnet designation four times in a row for excellent nursing care

October 21, 2024

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital teammates received news that they are the first in the state to achieve Magnet designation four times in a row. They also earned Magnet with Distinction recognition, a testament to their continued dedication to high-quality nursing practice.

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital is one of only nine South Carolina hospitals with Magnet designation and the hospital with the longest streak of designations. Less than 10 percent of hospitals in the U.S. are Magnet hospitals and less than 4 percent have achieved Magnet four or more times. On Thursday, the hospital earned 15 exemplars related to leadership and excellent patient outcomes.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet with Distinction Recognition Program distinguishes healthcare organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. This credential is a prestigious national honor for professional nursing practice.

“Magnet with Distinction recognition is a tremendous honor and reflects our commitment to delivering the highest quality of care to this community,” said Roper St. Francis Healthcare President and CEO Joseph DeLeon. “To earn Magnet recognition once was a great accomplishment and an incredible source of pride for our nurses. Our repeated achievement of this credential underscores the foundation of excellence and values that drive our entire staff to strive harder each day to meet the healthcare needs of the people we serve.”

Magnet with Distinction is an elite credential of nursing quality and confidence. For patients, this credential identifies organizations with satisfied nurses and safe, high-quality care.

“Achieving Magnet status for the fourth time demonstrates our ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in healthcare,” said Marissa Jamarik, senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Roper St. Francis Healthcare. “We are dedicated to continuously improving our practices to provide the best possible care for our patients.”

Roper St. Francis Healthcare boasts an enviable reputation for its commitment to innovation and excellence in nursing, and for its high standards, not just specific to Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.

  • Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital submitted their application for Magnet designation in March. As a three-time ANCC Pathway to Excellence-designated hospital, this officially launches their Magnet designation journey.
  • Roper Hospital’s survey toward Pathway for Excellence began Oct. 1 as a first step to Magnet designation.
  • The Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital team recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its first Pathway to Excellence designation from the ANCC, putting it on a road to Magnet designation.

The Magnet with Distinction Model provides a framework for nursing practice, research and measurement of outcomes. Through this framework, ANCC evaluates applicants across a number of components and dimensions to gauge an organization’s nursing excellence.
