Bowers named first executive director of SCHIEx

July 19, 2016

South Carolina Health Information Partners (SC-HIP) announces that Wyman F. Bowers has been named the first-ever chief executive officer of SCHIEx, the South Carolina Health Information Exchange.

Mr. Bowers is the former Chief Operating Officer for Midlands Orthopedics, P.A. Before that, he was the Associate General Counsel for the South Carolina Medical Association. He has both a Juris Doctor degree and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Carolina.

In his new position, Mr. Bowers will run all operations of SCHIEx – setting a vision, developing strategy in conjunction with the SC-HIP board, convening stakeholders, and acting as the face and voice of the organization.
SCHIEx is a network of connections that allows healthcare professionals to appropriately access, and securely share, a patient’s vital medical information electronically. This exchange was started as a result of an executive order by then-Gov. Mark Sanford in 2006, and was initially a state government entity. In March 2014, it became a private entity, governed by a nonprofit board, SC-HIP.

The exchange has grown to where it now links to the health records of more than a million patients in South Carolina.

Mr. Bowers is the organization’s first permanent, full-time director. He was preceded in that position on an interim basis by SC-HIP’s attorney, Kelly Jolley.
