Brent Nelsen Names Former Governor David Beasley to Statewide Leadership Team in his Bid to be the Next Superintendent of Education

March 10, 2010

GREENVILLE, SC – March 10, 2010 – Brent Nelsen, republican candidate for state superintendent of education, named former Governor David Beasley as Co-Chairman of his campaign to succeed Jim Rex as the state’s next education chief, his campaign announced today.

Nelsen said Beasley will join the campaign leadership team spearheaded by campaign chairman Senator Jim DeMint and was extremely honored to add “one of the state’s greatest champions of classroom accountability” to his team, referring to the Education Accountability Act that Beasley signed into law in 1998.

“Real reform starts with bringing more accountability to our classrooms,” said Nelsen, noting that he would “draw on the Governor’s experience and guidance” as he continues to take his message of reform across the state.

Beasley said it was “Nelsen’s values and vision” that led him to endorse Nelsen for the state’s top education post.

“It is time we bring integrity back to people of South Carolina,” said Beasley.  “Brent Nelsen is a man of the highest integrity who has the values and the vision to take our schools in the right direction.”

Beasley noted that Nelsen’s priorities to give parents more choices, to increase standards and accountability in schools, and to unite lawmakers and communities behind a campaign for positive change in the state education system demonstrates that “Brent Nelsen is exactly who we need to lead the Department of Education in Columbia.”

Nelsen said he expected to announce additional members to his state leadership team in the coming weeks.
