Brig. Gen. Twanda Young to keynote SC State’s spring ROTC Commissioning Ceremony

Claflin University graduate, Brig. Gen. Twanda Young, is a 1988 Distinguished Military Graduate of South Carolina State University’s ROTC Program. She will keynote SC State’s U.S. Army ROTC Commissioning Ceremony on Thursday, May 9, at 2 p.m. in the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. In 2017, Young became the first female officer, commissioned through SC State University’s ROTC program, to be promoted to general.
Since its establishment in 1947, the Bulldog Battalion, has equipped students with the skills needed to lead on and off the battlefield. Those who train with the Bulldog Battalion are among the nation’s most regarded military officers who have blazed trails for others to follow.
The students, who will receive their commissions as officers, have made a commitment to serve our nation with integrity, courage and perseverance. The honorees are:
South Carolina State University
Jameka Watts, from Washington D.C., will receive a degree in criminal justice. She will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Signal Corps branch.
Micheal Hathaway, from Charleston, South Carolina, will receive a degree in criminal justice. He will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Signal Corps branch.
Jarquis Brown, from Sumter, South Carolina, will receive a degree in political science and pre-law. He will be commissioned in the National Guard and will serve in the Infantry branch.
Joshua Tribble, from Blythewood, South Carolina, will receive a degree in broadcast communications. He will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Signal Corps branch.
Brandi McCoy, from Columbia, South Carolina, will receive a degree in agribusiness. She will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Adjutant General Corps branch.
Trevon Andrews, from Manning, South Carolina, will receive a degree in agribusiness. He will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Military Intelligence Detailed Infantry branch.
Nigel Council, from Sumter, South Carolina, will receive a degree in industrial engineering technology. He will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Air Defense Artillery branch.
Claflin University
Ter’ae Moxey, from North Wales, Pennsylvania, will receive a degree in business administration with a finance concentration. She will be commissioned in Army Reserve duty and will serve in the Finance Corps branch.
Glenadale Vogt Jr., from Orangeburg, South Carolina, will receive a degree in business administration. He will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Transportation Corps branch.
Ashante’ Graham, from Savannah, Georgia, will receive a degree in political science. She will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Military Intelligence branch.
Voorhees College
Lashaya Clark, from Bamberg, South Carolina, will receive a degree in sports management. She will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Signal Corps branch.
Ladazha Cole, from Sumter, South Carolina, will receive a degree in sociology. She will be commissioned in active duty and will serve in the Quatermaster Corps branch.
Brig. Gen. Young, a Darlington, South Carolina native, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Claflin University. She also earned a Master of Arts
degree in adult education and a Master of Arts degree in executive Development from Ball State University. She holds a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.
Young has served in command and staff positions in the continental U.S. and Hawaii with First Army, Joint Forces Command, the U.S. Army Reserve Command and in Afghanistan with NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan.
In addition, she is a graduate of the Adjutant General’s Officer basic and advanced courses. Her awards and decorations include the Horatio Gates Bronze medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
