Call for Entries! Contemporary Charleston 2011: Under the Radar
December 21, 2010CHARLESTON, SC – December 21, 2010 – Charleston magazine, the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art are partnering up to present “Contemporary Charleston 2011: Under the Radar,” a competition for cutting-edge, emerging artists in the Lowcountry. The winners will be featured in Charleston magazine’s May 2011 Arts Issue and exhibited at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park during its annual Piccolo Spoleto exhibition, “Contemporary Charleston.”
City Gallery at Waterfront Park coordinator Erin Glaze, Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art director Mark Sloan, and Charleston magazine editor-in-chief Darcy Shankland have selected a committee of arts leaders who will review and select 10 applicants that meet the following criteria: artists of any age who have resided in the Tricounty area (Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester) for at least two years, have never had a major local solo exhibition, and work in at least one of the following disciplines: installation, painting, sculpture, works on paper, printmaking, photography, digitally created work, video installation, and mixed media.

The City Gallery at Waterfront Park, owned by the City of Charleston and operated by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, is a venue for contemporary artwork that is new, vital and innovative, with a focus on broadening Charleston’s arts outlook. The City Gallery provides access to the visual arts for everyone in Charleston, S.C., visitors and residents alike, by offering exhibits that are all admission-free.
