Cason Development Group announces tenant for 2222 Sumter Street

September 18, 2017

Cason Development Group is bringing another new business to the Cottontown commercial neighborhood. Amsterdam Lumber Co. will be moving within the next month into 2222 Sumter St. in the historic neighborhood.

Amsterdam, an Edgefield-based custom wood supplier, will open its first design center and retail showroom in the 4,500-square-foot building next to Indah Coffee Company.

Cason purchased 2222 and 2238 Sumter Street from Joe W. “Bill” Dunn in 2015. The buildings had been the home of the Dunn Electric Co. Cason redeveloped the 12,000-square-foot building at 2238 Sumter St. to house Indah Coffee and Circa Barber Shop. The two businesses opened in May.

Until recently 2222 Sumter St. had housed a maintenance facility for Loomis Armored US, part of the international cash handling company.

Cason Development Group is also currently in talks with another boutique retailer about leasing space that adjoins the Indah building. Cason continues to explore other redevelopment opportunities in the Cottontown neighborhood.

Amsterdam specializes in reclaimed wood and thermally treated new lumber that can be customized for pattern and color for exterior and interior applications such as floors, ceilings and wall panels, as well as made into furniture. The Design Center at Amsterdam will be upfitted using the company’s products which will also be displayed in the showroom.

Amsterdam Lumber Co. CEO Martijn Van Zadelhoff said the intent is to create a unique and comfortable place where builders can bring clients to not only view the company’s products, but also work on customizing patterns and colors. “The thing that makes us different from the old run-of-the-mill flooring provider is that we are 100 percent custom. If you have something in mind, we can nine times out of 10 make it happen,” he said.

In the retail center, do-it-yourselfers also will be able to buy material to complete a project, whether that is two boards for a bookshelf or panels for a wall. Both processed new wood and reclaimed lumber will be available through the center.

The Design Center at Amsterdam will be the first new non-food retailer in the area since a renaissance of new businesses in the Cottontown area began about two years ago. The Sumter Street property is between Franklin and Jefferson streets and just around the corner from The War Mouth restaurant at 1209 Franklin St., which Cason Development Group transformed from an abandoned auto repair shop. A building at 1223 Franklin, just down block from The War Mouth, is under renovation for a brewery.

“We’re excited to have more retail down here,” said Frank Cason, president of Cason Development Group. “We wanted to be very selective about who we put in here. Does it fit the building? Does it fit the neighborhood? Does it help the neighborhood? We wanted another reason for people to come to Cottontown. We feel strongly that what Martijn and his team are doing is extremely unique and complementary to the other businesses in the area”
