CCSD completes new state-of-the-art Matilda F. Dunston Elementary School
August 7, 2019Matilda F. Dunston Elementary School, in Charleston County School District’s (CCSD) District 4 will open its doors to students in grades K – 4 for the 2019–2020 academic school year.
The project was funded by a “Yes” vote of the Charleston County Education Sales and Use Tax Referendum of 2014.
The new state-of-the-art 77,434 square foot building is a two-story facility that sits on a six-acre site and is designed to accommodate students in grades Childhood Development – 5.
“This was the most challenging project to design and construct given that a significant percentage of the building was on an active school campus and with an opening year of 2019,” said Reggie McNeil, CCSD Executive Director of Capital Programs. “Our design firm, construction team, and program manager did an amazing job building the new campus and demolishing the old building. Faculty and visitors will have adequate parking on the campus and the students will enjoy a larger facility with an increase in natural lighting, play space and an array of colorful accents for a most enjoyable learning experience.”
Liolio Architects designed the new Dunston ES, TQ Constructors built the school and Brownstone in partnership with Cumming, served as the program management firm to ensure the CCSD design requirements, project budget, and timeline were followed. The project started in May 2018 and was completed for occupancy in August 2019. The final phase of the project is to build the permanent bus loop and is scheduled to be completed in December 2019.
“We are very excited for the Dunston Elementary School students, teachers, and community to be starting the 2019-20 school year in a new building,” said Cheryl Savage, Principal. “The modern facility will provide state-of-theart technology, ample space for classrooms, parking, and enrichment activities which will enhance the learning environment. We look forward to infusing the new physical space with the vision and passion that guide the school’s interaction between teachers, student, parents, and community.”
