February 6, 2020

Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Midlands’ local center for philanthropy, and its donors are pleased to announce that during the first half of the 2019-2020 fiscal year (July 1, 2019, to December 31, 2019), more than $8.8 million was awarded in grants and scholarships.

The awarded amount, totaling $8,801,087, represents 1,012 grants and scholarships impacting a variety of causes across the region, state, and country. Some grants are awarded at the discretion of Central Carolina Community Foundation’s Community Impact Committee, while others are awarded based on donor recommendations. All grants and scholarships are approved by the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

“The Foundation has grown dramatically in the last 35 years through the generosity of our donors,” states JoAnn Turnquist, president & CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation. “The awarded grants will provide funding to organizations that are vital to our community’s wellbeing.”

The types of organizations most commonly funded during the first two quarters included education and scholarships, human services, faith-based, community improvement, and arts and culture. The grants bring the Foundation’s lifetime grantmaking total to more than $191 million.

The grants include $470,000 that was distributed to 47 Midlands nonprofits at a surprise breakfast hosted by the “Cheerful Giver,” an anonymous donor at the Foundation, and $298,462 that was awarded from the Lynches River Conservation Fund to improve water quality and ecological integrity of the Lynches River watershed.

More than $450,000 in scholarships were also included in the total amount awarded, providing financial assistance to 196 of South Carolina’s and the country’s outstanding students for the 2019-2020 school year.

Scholarship applications for the 2020-2021 school year are currently open through March 5, 2020.
