Central Carolina Community Foundation distributes over $3 million in grants and scholarships during last quarter

Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Midlands’ local center for philanthropy, and its donors announced more than $3 million in grants and scholarships were awarded during the third quarter of the fiscal year (January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2020), bringing the total grants and scholarships distributed for the year to over $12 million.
The third quarter awards, totaling $3,335,432 represent 382 grants, to organizations across the region, state, and country. Some grants are awarded at the discretion of Central Carolina Community Foundation’s Community Impact Committee, while others are awarded based on donor recommendations. All grants and scholarships are approved by the Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees. These grants bring the Foundation’s lifetime grantmaking total to more than $195 million.

The Community Foundation is often one of the first to respond when disaster strikes the community. When tornadoes destroyed North Central High School in Kershaw County, the board provided a $5,000 grant to purchase library books. The grant was generously matched by First Citizens Bank.
In March, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck the state and nation, the Foundation’s board and donors responded and established the Midlands Community Response fund with donations totaling $171,500. The fund will provide resources to nonprofit organizations across the region working with priority groups, including senior citizens, residents without health insurance and/or access to paid sick leave, part-time and or/seasonal workers — including hospitality and service-industry workers, individuals experiencing homelessness, residents with limited English language proficiency, and healthcare workers in the Foundation’s 11-county service area of Calhoun, Clarendon, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg, Richland, Saluda, and Sumter.
The third-quarter total also includes $438,000 in Hurricane Florence Response grants from the One SC Fund, which provides grants to nonprofits to fund relief, recovery, and/or rebuilding assistance programs from state-declared emergencies. The One SC Fund was activated by Governor McMaster in March 2020 for COVID-19 response, and a grantmaking coalition including SC Grantmakers Network, Together SC, and the United Way Association of S.C. was formed to respond to community needs during the pandemic. With financial support from businesses, organizations, individuals and foundations across the state, region, and country, this fund will provide support to the most vulnerable in the state through grants to nonprofit organizations providing essential services.
