Chapin High School ‘Eagle Club’ donates new state-of-the-art scoreboard
September 21, 2014CHAPIN, SC – The lights – and scores – at Chapin High School’s football field will shine a little brighter now, thanks to a generous donation by the school’s athletic booster club.
The Chapin Eagle Club debuted a new $370,000 scoreboard on Sept. 19, a project fully funded through private sources. The new scoreboard, which features instant replay and other features, was unveiled and formally donated to the school just before the Chapin v. Brookland-Cayce matchup. Chapin students will utilize and help operate the new scoreboard, which Eagle Club members tout as the second largest high school video board in the state and the third largest structurally. No funds from the school or Lexington-Richland School District Five were used in the purchase or installation of the scoreboard.
“We’re pretty excited about it. We believe the student-athletes here deserve the best and with all the other construction upgrades at the school, the timing was just right to have a new, state-of-the-art scoreboard installed,” said Chapin Eagle Club President Mac Estridge. “It has been a long time coming, but it’s a relief to see it up and running. It’s a great thing for our student-athletes and a great thing for our students who will be operating and training on the scoreboard.”
On Friday afternoon, just hours before the scoreboard was used in a game for the first time, students and staff toting “thank you Eagle Club” banners viewed the board for the first time. A rippling American flag and student-created inspirational video flashed across the screen and new speakers showed the full impact of the new scoreboard as technicians tested the new technology for its night-time display.
“This would not be possible without the generosity of the Eagle Club, and it certainly speaks volumes to the support that this group and this community has for Chapin High,” said Dr. Akil Ross, principal of the school. “Chapin High School has a long tradition of excellence and providing our students and staff with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. This is a continuation of that, and we are so grateful to the Chapin Eagle Club for what they’ve done for the school here today.”
Justin Gentry, Chapin High head football coach, added: “It adds a lot of excitement to the field, and we know it will benefit our players, students and school for many years to come.”
