Charleston Animal Society receives 50,000 from PetSmart Charities to fuel spay and neuter efforts in the Lowcountry

February 20, 2018

Charleston Animal Society today announced it received $50,000 from PetSmart Charities, the largest funder of animal welfare in North America, to help fuel its spay and neuter efforts in the Lowcountry. With the help of this donation, the organization will offer low-cost spays and neuters for Pit Bull type dogs. “The ‘pittie mix’ is one of the most common dogs you will find across the Lowcountry. This grant from Petsmart Charities will help us with the population of these animals,” said Charleston Animal Society CEO Joe Elmore.

This grant will keep the Simon Greer Mobile Spay-Neuter Clinic very busy visiting communities that have little access to veterinary services. The goal is to provide hundreds of surgeries to dogs across the Lowcountry. “We are thankful PetSmart Charities gave us this opportunity to reach out to under-served areas of our community,” said Charleston Animal Society Director of Anti-Cruelty and Outreach Aldwin Roman. “This funding will allow us to provide vaccines, check-ups and surgeries to 500 dogs.”

PetSmart Charities aims to proactively prevent pet homelessness through increased spay and neuter efforts.  With the help of animal welfare partners, such as Charleston Animal Society, PetSmart Charities has funded over 1.7 million spay and neuter surgeries in the U.S. since 2009.
