Charleston Southern University School of Education Receives National Recognition

CHARLESTON, SC – The Charleston Southern University School of Education has received notification that all its teacher education programs have received national recognition by their specialty program associations.
Early Childhood, Secondary English Education, Secondary Math Education and Physical Education [PK-12] received national recognition to join previously nationally recognized programs, Elementary Education and Education Leadership [Elementary Principal and Secondary Principal]. In addition, Instrumental and Choral Music [PK-12] meet national standards through a separate process.
“The School of Education is in a growth mode and the national recognition and our new majors, with add-ons at the graduate level for teacher licensure, position us as a leading teacher education provider in the state and region,” said Dr. George Metz, dean of the School of Education.
National standards are applied to curriculum, test results, clinical practice, assessment of students, planning for student learning, pedagogy and content knowledge. Title II scores indicate Charleston Southern education graduates far exceed national averages.
Earlier this month, the South Carolina State Board of Education approved programs in Secondary Biology Education and Secondary Social Studies Education for the School of Education.
Both programs begin immediately. Metz said, “CSU had a social studies licensure program, but it went dormant. However, student interest in both majors was expressed, and we responded. There is a significant shortage of high school biology teachers locally, regionally and nationally. Through a strong collaboration with the CSU biology faculty, the new major/licensure program was developed.”
The two new programs add to the existing Secondary English Education and Secondary Math Education programs. “We now have the four core subject areas in secondary education,” said Metz. “This positions us to attract more students as well as lays the foundation for a feasibility study for adding the middle grades licensure program at CSU.”
