Citadel president, faculty and cadets earn recognition for civic engagement

The 2017 South Carolina Campus Compact (SCCC) Civic Engagement Award recipients and honorees include the president of The Citadel, a cadet, a cadet company, a faculty member and one of the college’s community partners.
“Our review committee was amazed by the level of passion for civic engagement being demonstrated on our member campuses and within our communities and the immeasurable work being done,” said South Carolina Campus Compact Executive Director Jessica Lynn.

Lynn visited The Citadel to present the South Carolina Civic Engagement Professional Award in person to Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa, who was named the statewide recipient. South Carolina lawmakers, Rep. Wendell Gilliard and Sen. Marlon Kimpson, attended the presentation.
“As I read the description of the criteria for this honor, I saw the face of the man who in 10 short years had led us from a part-time pilot initiative to a fully integrated, strategically prioritized, and nationally recognized service learning and civic engagement program,” wrote Conway Saylor, Ph.D., director of service learning for the Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics at The Citadel, in the document nominating Rosa for the award. “One of his greatest legacies will be that he brought new substance and integrity to The Citadel’s mission to educate and develop principled leaders.”
Saylor is the director of service learning and civic engagement for the Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics at The Citadel. She noted that under Rosa’s leadership, long-range plans made civic engagement a top priority, the Krause Center was funded and established, and the college earned numerous national service-centric commendations, including the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.
One of the college’s community partners, Kaleidoscope, is a statewide recipient of the South Carolina Engaged Community Partner Award. Kaleidoscope is one of the expanded learning programs offered by the Charleston County School District. The award is presented by SCCC to “a community partner that has worked to support the civic mission of their partnering campus and has enhanced the quality of life in the community in meaningful and measurable ways.” The Citadel, which provides cadets and student volunteers to assist with Kaleidoscope activities, nominated the program for the award.
“They have been our longest and strongest partner since a decade ago when we began to develop community relationships at deeper levels,” said Saylor.

The 2017 SCCC Civic Engagement Leadership Awards Ceremony and Summit will be held at 4p.m., April 21, at Greenville Technical College, in Greenville.
