City of Greenville Celebrates New Section of Swamp Rabbit Trail

GREENVILLE, SC – June 6, 2012 – Mayor Knox White was joined by Dr. Keith Miller, Greenville Technical College President, and Jerry Howard, President/CEO of the Greenville Area Development Corporation, to officially open a new section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail between Faris Road and Pleasantburg Drive along the Cleveland Street side of Greenville Tech’s Barton Campus.
The new section, which is just under a mile long (approximately 4,200 feet or .8 miles) and 13 feet wide in most places (some places along the trail are 10 feet wide due to limited right-of-way), includes a 170-foot bridge constructed of weathering steel and a concrete deck, which crosses the Reedy River at the entrance to Greenville Tech. The total cost of the project, which also included improvements to stormwater infrastructure and curb and gutter along Cleveland Street and the Reedy River, was $1.7 million.
The City contributed $1.41 million to the project and the remainder of the funding included $240,000 in Local Public Agency grant funding from the South Carolina Department of Transportation and $100,000 in Recreational Trails Program grant funding from the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism. Greenville Technical College provided the City with an easement, which allowed the trail to be constructed along its property.
The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 13.5 mile, shared-use path that connects downtown Greenville to the City of Travelers Rest, Furman University, The Greenville Zoo, Cleveland Park, Caine Halter YMCA and Greenville Tech. Approximately 5.25 miles of the Swamp Rabbit Trail are within the city limits.
