City Of Spartanburg Announces Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport Grand Opening

November 9, 2011

SPARTANBURG, SC – November 9, 2011 – The Grand Opening celebration of the Spartanburg Downtown  Memorial Airport will take place on Thursday, November 17 at 11:00 a.m. The public is invited to attend this celebration.

The newly renovated 9,727 square foot terminal building received additional space to the front of the terminal building including handicap accessible restrooms, a stairwell and a lobby.

The 2nd floor of the building expanded from a 1½ story to a full two (2) story floor that includes office space and pilots lounge.   Conference rooms are available on all floors for public use.

Historic aviation photos, funded through private donations adorn the walls of the entire airport.

A new parking lot and a secure parking area for overnight travelers was added as well.

A statue of a young child flying on a paper airplane was donated by the Group of 100 and sits in the middle of an outdoor plaza.  Decorative bricks for the plaza will be on sale at the Grand Opening.

The public will be able to reserve their copy of Spartanburg Memorial Airport, compiled and edited by General Ed Y. Hall during the Grand Opening event.  This 250 page scrapbook of the history of the airport from 1910 – 2011 contains over 100 illustrations including Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart.  Production should be complete by December 31.  All profits from the sale of the scrapbook will go towards further enhancement of the facility.

The City is very appreciative of its partners who include Spartanburg County, the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission and TD Bank.  Without their support, this project would not have been possible.
