City Office of Sustainability, regional partners to offer free pumpkin composting options

In an effort to promote environmentally-friendly practices throughout the holiday season, the city of Charleston Office of Sustainability and its regional partners are providing a number of free pumpkin composting options.
The following opportunities are available to members of the public:
- Drop-off at Bees Ferry Compost Facility: In partnership with Charleston County, from November 1 until 30, 2023, a special clean pumpkin collection bin will be available near the food scrap carts at the Bees Ferry Compost Facility, located at 1344 Bees Ferry Road. The facility’s hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Attend the city’s Pumpkin Smash event: Join Charleston’s first Pumpkin Smash event at the West Ashley Farmers Market on November 19, 2023, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Ackerman Park. This event invites participants to smash their used pumpkins before they are composted. For more details, please click here.
- Join the Charleston Composts program: Charleston Composts offers members free pumpkin composting year-round at any of the existing food scrap drop-off sites throughout the region. Charleston Composts is a free composting program sponsored by the cities of Charleston, Folly Beach and Isle of Palms, the towns of Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island, and Charleston County. Residents can sign up to participate in the program here.
Participants are asked to remove any paint, glue, glitter, candle wax or other non-compostable decorations from pumpkins prior to composting.
