City Park Rangers to host free Total Eclipse Party & Walks

Bring the family out to Riverfront Park and let a park ranger guide you through a variety of family-friendly activities including a Wet Sandal Walk, Total Eclipse Party and more during the month of August, the Columbia Parks & Recreation Department announced.
All activities are open to youth and adults.

Take a walk with a ranger to learn about trees under the canopy of our floodplain forest.
Meet at the Riverfront Park’s north parking lot, 4122 River Dr.
One City, Two Canals & Three Rivers | Saturday, August 12 | 2-3:30 p.m. | Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel St.
Walk with us to learn how Columbia used our waterways in the past; hear about the evaluation of the Columbia Canal following 2015’s flood and discover details about the Three Rivers Greenway along the beautiful Lower Saluda River.

Wet Sandal Walk | Friday, August 18 | 6-7 p.m. | Riverfront Park, 4122 River Dr.
Join us to learn about the Broad River and its abundant resources. We will walk beside the river in the shade, talk about the historic Columbia Canal and learn the ecological importance of this special place.

Total Eclipse Party | Saturday, August 19 | 4-7 p.m. | Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel St.
We have eclipse viewing glasses, safety tips and park information at this family-friendly outing. Decorate our walkway with sidewalk chalk to welcome Monday’s eclipse visitors. Guests can also take a short park tour with a ranger to learn about the city’s history on the riverfront and our plans to connect future greenways.

Geology Walk | Sunday, August 20 | 4-5 p.m. | Riverfront Park, 4122 River Dr.
Join park rangers for a tour through the geologic history of Riverfront Park. Learn about the basic geology of the Columbia area, including our position on the fall line; the stratigraphy of the riparian landscape; and basic mineralogy. Discover how the geology of this area was the very reason that Columbia, SC was settled on the riverbanks here and how those rocks helped to make Columbia the city that it is today.
Meet at the Columbia Canal Head Gates at Riverfront Park’s north end, 4122 River Dr.
Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably, bring binoculars and field guides as well as any essentials like water, sunscreen, insect repellent and sturdy walking footwear.
