Clyburn Marks End of Combat Mission in Iraq

September 1, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC – September 1, 2010 – House Majority Whip James E.Clyburn today released the following statement on the conclusion ofcombat operations in Iraq.

“The end of combat operations in Iraq is another important steptoward the fulfillment of President Obama’s promise to reduce the numberof troops in the region, end our involvement in Iraq and bring ourtroops home.  Our service members have gone beyond the call of duty overthe last seven years to bring some stability to Iraq and create theconditions on the ground that will allow the country to form their owngovernment. I urge the Iraqi leadership to use this milestone to comeback to the negotiating table and form a government as quickly aspossible.

“As our troops return, it is important that we help them transition fromthe battlefield to life back home.  Democrats have consistently foughtto provide our veterans with the resources necessary to assist thattransition, and we will continue to do so in the future.  We’ve madehistoric investments in the VA budget, the G.I. Bill, health care, mental health, support for caregivers and improved care for women.  Ourbrave men and women in uniform and their families who sacrificed so muchfor our country deserve that support.
