Coastal Structures Corporations provides insight on the benefits of using specialty concrete for a wide range of projects
February 12, 2018At Coastal Structures, we always strive to provide excellent services to our clients, including specialty services that many other construction companies cannot provide. With benefits like longevity, high performance and durability, using Specialty Concrete is not only a great choice when quality is concerned, but it also has the capabilities to turn your project into a work of art.
The term “Specialty Concrete” is used by Coastal Structures to describe concrete work that is beyond the capability of the typical concrete subcontractor. It is concrete that requires a higher level of expertise, training, practice, and in many cases, special equipment. Since the start of the company, we’ve staffed exceptional crews that specialize in this highly sought-after job.
Specialty Concrete is a unique collection of work that requires special equipment, technical knowledge and extensive experience. Examples of jobs that may require Specialty Concrete include:
- Oyster tabby sidewalks
- Loading docks and ramps
- Retaining walls
- Equipment foundations and grouting
- Site paving and roadwork
- Industrial floor patches
- Chemical resistant concrete patches
- Structural elevated slabs
- Foundations requiring critical layouts
- Trench drains and sump structures
- Tank farms and containments
Coastal Structures employs several concrete subcontractors and are used based on project requirements. We are proud to have foremen that concentrate in Specialty Concrete for the simple fact that we have numerous clients with projects that need this type of work.
Detyens Shipyards, Inc. | 2005-2017
Detyens Shipyards has helped thousands of ship owners around the world—from routine maintenance to underwater hull treatments. The North Charleston-based company is the one-stop shop ship repair and service. Coastal Structures provided concrete dry-dock support and deep foundations for tower cranes.
Shipyard Park | 2017-2018
Shipyard Park is a 20-acre waterfront baseball facility surrounded by the beautiful Wando River in Charleston, S.C. The facility includes three youth-size fields and two collegiate-size fields. It also has a state-of-the-art indoor training facility, press boxes, scoreboards, field surfaces and covered stands. The design of these facilities uses concrete extensively in complex foundations, thickened slabs and vertical pours. Coastal Structures’ Specialty Concrete team was selected to complete this portion of the project and provide the required special equipment, technical knowledge and extensive experience. We created the 50,000-square foot oyster tabby sidewalks and plaza. The lead contractor, Harbor Contracting, described our team as the “best in the business.”
International Paper | 2012-2017
International Paper is one of the world’s leading producers of fiber-based packaging, pulp and paper. With a location located in Georgetown, S.C., Coastal Structures has provided numerous jobs for the company since 2012. From road repair and sump structure to trench drain removal/replacement and elevated slab work, we have continued to provide exceptional work so production can run smoothly and efficiently.
In 2015, we completed an 8-month-long project removing and replacing structural elevated slabs. We had to ensure that the mill’s equipment was secure before removing concrete. These slabs sloped and we used a special concrete mix that is much denser and does not allow chemicals to deteriorate like normal concrete does.
DSM Nutritional | 2012-2018
DSM Nutritional is a global science-based company that specializes in the production of health and nutrition materials. From 2012 until 2013, Coastal Structures processed the foundation for the company’s building and equipment. This project had an elevated slab and walkway, as well as vertical containment walls around the building. The building also had trench drains in the structural slab.
From 2014 until 2017, we created a new entrance for the plant that included a three-lane road, scale house foundation, sidewalks and gravel parking. The team also created a new tank farm with vertical containment walls in order to increase its capacity. We are currently wrapping up the construction of two different road projects for the plant.
