Coffee Roost – Brewing more than Coffee in New Location
June 6, 2021The BUZZ reported a few weeks ago that the Coffee Roost was relocating to the Midtown Building on the square in Laurens.
Just steps from the original location, the new space is expansive with separate areas for groups to gather, people to work, curl up with a good book or catch up with a friend.
The Coffee Roost opened in the new location on Saturday, June 5th for the Laurens High School Prom on the square. Hours of operation will be refined during the month of June but for now will be Monday – Saturday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Coffee Roost owner, Peggy Cwiakala, looks forward to bringing back some of the events they were doing before COVID-19. Look for music nights, game nights, live theatre, poetry readings, technical and cultural presentations and a murder mystery night which would include a live theatrical performance and audience participation to solve the mystery.
“I’m excited about the next chapter of the journey that is the Coffee Roost,” said Cwiakala. “My hope is that we will be a place where people can create community, engage in passionate, civil discussion and hear speakers and hold events that they might not ordinarily be able to do. I feel our citizenry is special and worthy and I want to give them something special.”
The décor in the new space is as eclectic and refreshing as its owner. Several items hanging on the wall have special meaning to her (click on the photo gallery below to see them and to get the backstory on each one).
The makeover and relocation to the Midtown Building certainly gives the coffee shop a “new look” but there is one carry over from the original location that means a lot to Cwiakala. The original serving counter or workstation that was designed by her husband and built by students was relocated, painted to match the spectacular bar, and has a prominent space in the floor plan.
New on the menu is the Boba Brain Freeze – bursting fruit bubbles in a hand crafted refreshing cold drink. The drink menu will also include the menu regular customers have come to enjoy and most popular items, Peg’s Cubano, the Honey Red Eye, the frappes, and the hot cocoa. Also making a comeback will be the blended teas that you won’t find anywhere else locally.
The Coffee Roost has been an anchor for the Laurens community since it opened in January 2018. The challenges brought on by the pandemic brought with it considerations for Peggy and Martin Cwiakala of returning to the Boston area. But Laurens wouldn’t have any of that. With the support and encouragement of the Mayor, Main Street Laurens and the Holmes family the Coffee Roost will continue and be better than ever.
Next time you’re in the neighborhood drop by for a cup of coffee, tea or one of “Peg’s specialty drinks” and relax in a place that feels like home. Because it is.

Back when Peggy was in college she was in a competition for which she won first place for designing an imaginary inn called The Golden Moose before opening up she was out shopping for the Coffee Roost and saw this moose which was an immediate impulse purchase. Tim painted the board and her husband hung the moose and now it’s part of the whimsical nature of this shop.
