Coker College Hosted Congressional Candidates

HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker College hosted congressional candidates Gloria Bromell-Tinubu on Tuesday, Oct. 28 and Congressman Tom Rice on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

Bromell-Tinubu and Rice met with college students and members of the Hartsville community in Davidson Hall to discuss their political platforms. Mal Hyman, assistant professor of sociology, introduced the candidates who gave brief statements before engaging in a Q&A session with the audience.

Gloria Bromell-Tinubu

Bromell-Tinubu, born in Georgetown, S.C., earned her undergraduate degree from Howard University, master’s degree in agricultural economics and doctorate in applied economics from Clemson University. Bromell-Tinubu served as a tenured professor and chair of the economics department at Spelman College before moving back to South Carolina and teaching in the College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. She serves on the board of directors of two local community development organizations and is a business development consultant with a staffing service in the Pee Dee area. Bromell-Tinubu and her husband, Soji, have four children and two grandchildren.

Congressman Tom Rice

Rice, resident of Horry County since age four, earned his master’s degree in accounting and a law degree from University of South Carolina. Rice worked for the worldwide accounting and consulting firm Deloitte and Touche before practicing tax law with Van Osdell Law Firm. Rice later established his own practice Rice & MacDonald Law Firm. He has served in organizations such as the Myrtle Beach Haven Homeless Shelter, Boy Scouts, Ocean View Foundation and Trinity Episcopal Church. Rice serves on three congressional committees: transportation and infrastructure, budget and small business committee. He and his wife, Wrenzie, have three children.
