Coming Soon– The Fields at Saluda Shoals Park
May 21, 2014COLUMBIA, SC – Saluda Shoals Park will break ground on an outdoor athletic complex and adventure course on June 5 at 11 a.m.Development of the Fields at Saluda Shoals will include a 60-acre soccer and tennis complex while expanding the park’s existing outdoor recreational area by another 60-acres. The event will be held on the Park property located at 6107 St. Andrews Rd. and is open to the public.
The new area initially will include a soccer complex with six fields, a pavilion with restrooms and concessions, tennis facilities including six clay courts and four hard surface courts, a riverfront high adventure course and zip line and a new canoe, kayak and tube take-out. Plans are to add two additional soccer fields in the future. A second park entrance with connecting roadway to the riverfront will complete the project. Construction will begin immediately and the new facilities are expected to open in spring of 2015.
“The expansion of Saluda Shoals Park offers much needed space to accommodate the growth and the rising needs for fields in our community for youth athletics and tournament play said Elizabeth B. Taylor, Executive Director for the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission. “The new facilities will allow ICRC to offer additional athletic programs for youth, space for tournament play, and expanded access to the Saluda River for boating and outdoor recreational amenities.”
The Fields at Saluda Shoals will be constructed on the former GE, Phillips /or BC Components industrial site at St. Andrews and Bush River roads. The Irmo Recreation Commission, which oversees the operation of Saluda Shoals Park, purchased the property in September, 2004 and has been working with DHEC to restore and prepare the land for development.
