EdVenture Awarded Grant from NASA for Development of New Exhibit on the Science of Flight

August 22, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC– August 22, 2014– EdVenture Children’s Museum has been awarded a grant of $893,308 to fund the creation of a new interactive exhibit gallery focused on the science and technology of flight. Goals of the project include educating multi-generational family audiences about the principles and the future of aeronautics; providing hands-on, accessible and immersive opportunities to explore NASA technology; and demonstrate the cultural impact of flight in our global community.

The design of the permanent 1700 square foot exhibit will feature flight technology, materials science and NASA’s role in aeronautics for learners ages 3-12 years, their parents/caregivers and teachers.

“This support from NASA allows us to bring to life the science of flight through a state-of-the-art exhibit that will serve as the catalyst for new programs and STEM-based initiatives for all of our audiences including daily visitors, school and group field studies, and professional development for teachers and educators across the state,” said Vice President of Education Nikki Williams.

The exhibit and programming will work together to develop a pipeline of skilled workers to support community workforce needs and communicate the importance and relevance of NASA’s contributions to the nation and the world.

“As featured in recent news articles, the aerospace industry is taking off in South Carolina, so the timeliness of our receiving this award couldn’t be more exciting,” said Williams.

EdVenture is one of only 12 organizations or science centers across the country to share $6 million in grants from NASA’s Competitive Program for Science Museums, Planetariums and NASA Visitor Centers Plus Other Opportunities, a program that funds informal STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning experiences. Final funding is contingent upon NASA’s approval of each organization’s detailed business plan.

“Research shows that for most Americans, only about 20 percent of their learning occurs in traditional school settings with the remainder coming from other experiences,” said Mary Frances Sladek, director for STEM Education and Accountability in NASA’s Office of Education. “The new opportunities offered by these museums and informal education institutions will use NASA content to amplify STEM concepts beyond the classroom.”
