eighth blackbird to Kick Off Indie Grits 2016

April 4, 2016

Indie Grits, hosted by the Nickelodeon Theatre, the Southeast’s premier film and culture festival for DIY media-makers, will take place April 14-17, 2016 in Columbia, SC. In partnership with Southern Exposure New Music Series at the University of South Carolina, Indie Grits welcomes Grammy and MacArthur Award-winning sextet eighth blackbird to perform April 14. In celebration of 10 years of Indie Grits, this concert and all events are free, thanks to a Central Carolina Community Foundation Connected Communities grant.

The concert will take place on the banks of the Congaree near the intersection of Senate and Gist streets. Along with the music performance, Indie Grits alum Patrick Nugent will present original projections created for the festival. Earsight Duo will open for eighth blackbird.

“The Southern Exposure New Music Series is tremendously excited to collaborate for the first time with Indie Grits, and I can think of no better group to feature than eighth blackbird. Their reputation speaks for itself: they’ve won four Grammy awards, a MacArthur award, and have recorded seven critically acclaimed albums,” said Mike Harley, artistic director for Southern Exposure. “This is an ensemble that has transformed classical concert music over the last 15-20 years, and which puts on spectacular live shows—in this case, one that will be enhanced by film, a live VJ, and an amazing outdoor location. I can’t wait to see this concert myself!”

This concert will be free and open to the public.
