Entrepreneur Secrets: 7 strategies of a national champion

Don’t know who Dabo Swinney is?

You must have been asleep for the last month.

Swinney’s Clemson Tigers are national football champs.

He and his team have been all over the media ever since.

Swinney is more than just a successful college football coach.

He teaches business lessons all of us can profit from.

Last week we talked about some of his strategies.

Here are seven more that will help you in business and life.

  1. Don’t confuse teaching with criticism.

When you teach, you correct mistakes.

You improve skills, techniques and understanding.

You show others how to be more successful in their work.

  1. Know your and your people’s limitations.

Go to their strengths. Avoid their weaknesses.

Tailor the work so that each task goes to someone’s strengths.

You’re creative but not necessarily a whiz with numbers.

Learn what you need to know but have someone else do the job.

  1. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

If you’re not uncomfortable, you’re not trying hard enough.

Your people too comfortable? They aren’t trying hard either.

This doesn’t mean taking stupid risks.

It means daring to reach for greatness.

  1. Focus on today and tomorrow.

Pay attention to what’s going on right now.

Make adjustments as you need to – and you will need to.

But have the vision to look ahead to the long-term goal.

It’s not just about making a profit today.

It’s building for a sustainable future tomorrow.

Many managers try only to make next week’s sales goals.

They run the risk of building for the future.

  1. Lead your people. Manage their resources.

Make sure they have what they need to do first class work.

  1. Recruit great people for attitude, brains and character.

We look for the ABCs in those we bring on board:

Do they have can-do attitudes? Are they great thinkers?

Do they have the guts to make tough but right decisions.

  1. Teach the difference between a job and a calling.

A job produces an income, a calling something even bigger.

Ask them what they always wanted to do in their lives.

Hire those who feel this work is their purpose in life.
