Entrepreneur Secrets – Find a need and fill it
July 5, 2016By Jerry Bellune
This is some of the best advice you’ll ever get.
It’s the basis for supply and demand.
Fred Braun is an excellent example of this.
Fred was too young to retire — and bored.
He rescued a failing company from ruin and sold it.
The sale made him a multi-millionaire.
His wife didn’t want him to dabble in politics.
Invited to serve as a prison advisor, he accepted.
The Kansas prisons had a manpower problem.
Lots of prisoners with nothing to do but watch TV.
Fred had an idea: Find work they could be paid for.
It took some doing due to prison work regulations.
But Fred and prison officials worked it out.
Fred bought a failing Leavenworth manufacturer.
He and the prisons invited prisoners to apply for jobs.
They were carefully screened and trained.
If they caused trouble, they would be fired.
From a minimum wage, they had to pay for:
• Their own room and board at the prison.
• State and federal incomes taxes like the rest of us.
• Restitution to the victims of crime and their families.
• Child support and other family expenses.
Whatever was left went into a savings account.
With these workers, Fred’s company succeeded.
Two more failing manufacturers were successful.
His “alumni” had jobs when their prison terms ended.
How many lapsed back into lives of crime?
Less than 30%, half the national average.
Fred was proud of turning inmates into taxpayers.
“That’s punishment enough,” he joked.
The lesson for all of us should be apparent.
Opportunity is all around us. Open your eyes.
We must decide if it is an opportunity for us.
If it is, we need to seize it and make the most of it.
