First Citizens Bank donates $100,000 to International African American Museum

January 29, 2018

First Citizens Bank has donated $100,000 to the International African American Museum (IAAM), which is slated to break ground later this year.

For more than a century, First Citizens has successfully served its customers while adhering to its fundamental values of “working hard, working with integrity, listening to what its customers have to say and taking the long-term view.” The bank is also deeply committed to diversity, which fortifies communities and society as a whole.

With this donation, First Citizens is particularly interested in supporting students and providing them with enrichment opportunities. The IAAM’s visitor projections include a substantial number of low-income students.

“As the museum gets closer to opening its doors, approximately two years from now, we will have plans in place to provide the necessary resources to make the museum accessible to these students,” said Michael Boulware Moore, IAAM President and CEO. “The First Citizens grant will be used to bring to life the International African American Museum, which will serve – in such an important way – a population that First Citizens is dedicated to supporting.”

First Citizens President Peter Bristow noted that, “We’re proud to make a difference in the communities where we work and live by supporting the International African American Museum. It’s just one of the ways we strive to fulfill our Forever First brand promise to be the best bank possible.”

About the IAAM

Nearly half of all enslaved Africans forced to America through the Transatlantic Slave Trade arrived in Charleston, and the vast majority disembarked at Gadsden’s Wharf, the future home of the International African American Museum (IAAM) and one of the most significant and sacred sites of the African American experience in the Western hemisphere. The IAAM, a museum, memorial and site of conscience, will present unvarnished history and culture, commemorate and celebrate the foundational role that Africans and their descendants played in the making of America, and highlight their diasporic connections around the world. It will include immersive, interactive exhibits engaging to all ages and feature the Center for Family History, a leading genealogy archive that will help visitors identify their individual threads in the complex tapestry of history.
