Free City Ranger Programs offered in February

The City of Columbia’s Parks Rangers will host a new series of ranger programs for the month of February including a mushroom garden class and various series on Riverfront Park’s history, the Columbia Parks & Recreation Department announced.
Both youth and adults can participate in the following activities:

Learn to Grow Your Own Mushrooms! | Saturday, February 10 | 1pm
Join Park Ranger Benjamin Wildt for an introduction to the wonderful world of Shiitake cultivation on logs! This introductory class will cover selection of logs, spawn type, inoculation, incubation and fruit body initiation techniques. This session is a required prerequisite for our hands-on inoculation workshop on Sat. March 10. Class size limited to 20 participants. Email [email protected] to register.
Meet at the Red Schoolhouse at Riverfront Park South area parking lot, 312 Laurel St.
Ask a Ranger Series | Tuesdays, Feb. 13, 20 & 27 | 6pm
These walks will give you a general overview of the park’s cultural and natural history, and allow you a chance to ask the rangers questions about the park. Wear good walking shoes and bring a refillable water bottle.

Winter is for the Birds! | Saturday, February 17 | 2pm
Learn about the birds at our park and in your back yards at this time of year. Even though it may be cold outside, we have a surprising number of birds spending the winter at Riverfront Park. We’ll look around to find birds, so bring binoculars and field guides if you have them. There is always avian activity along the water, and this is the perfect time of year to spy some of our favorite raptors as well.
Meet on top of the Canal Head gates at Riverfront Park’s North parking lot, 4122 River Drive.
One City, Two Canals & Three Rivers | Sunday, February 24 | 1-2:30pm
Walk with us to learn how Columbia used our waterways in the past; hear about the evaluation of the Columbia Canal following 2015’s flood and discover details about pending construction of the Three Rivers Greenway along the beautiful Lower Saluda River.
Meet at the Red Schoolhouse at Riverfront Park South area parking lot, 312 Laurel St.
Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably, bring binoculars and field guides as well as any essentials like water, sunscreen, insect repellent and sturdy walking footwear.
