Garvin Design Group brings home 2 Honor Awards from AIA South Carolina Gala
May 9, 2017Garvin Design Group accepted 2 Honor Awards for Adaptive Reuse/Renovation at the 2017 AIA South Carolina’s annual Design Awards Gala in Charleston, SC.
The City Market complex, located at 705, 707, and 711 Gervais Street, was recognized for successfully returning the existing buildings to their original industrial form, while capitalizing on the opportunities these forms afford to mixed commercial and residential uses. GDG and Hood Construction uncovered and removed the 1940s alterations and returned the facades and alleyways back to their original 1860’s glory, bringing the mixed-use development back to life. City Market is now reborn with Newk’s Eatery, Grill Marks, Twisted Spur Brewery, the Wired Goat Cafe, the City Market Place venue space, and two apartments in Columbia’s thriving Vista.

Palmetto Compress
GDG and Triangle Construction were honored to accept their Adaptive Reuse Award for the Palmetto Compress renovation which focused on preserving the original cotton warehouse form, while introducing 197 apartments, as well as retail uses within the given framework. Even though Palmetto Compress no longer houses cotton, the building is one of only three surviving cotton compress facilities in the Southeast and one of the largest cotton warehouses in the state. The Palmetto Compress transformation also helps to anchor a transforming district between downtown Columbia and the riverfront.
“We appreciate the recognition of these challenging restorations very much. The greatest reward is to see them full of life and activity again,” said Scott Garvin, President of Garvin Design Group.
