GCM receives $500 Meals on Wheels grant
June 11, 2015GREER, SC – Greer Community Ministries (GCM) has received a $500 grant from Meals on Wheels America for participating in the 13th Annual March for Meals campaign. This year’s grants were made possible through the generosity of Subaru of America, Inc. and its seventh annual Share the Love event in which the company donated $250 to participating charities for every new vehicle purchased or leased.
“The March for Meals campaign helps us shine a light on the need for this vital program in our community,” said Cindy Simpler, executive director. “When community leaders and volunteers see the need first hand by driving Meals on Wheels routes, they are better equipped to help promote our needs to people in their circles of influence.”
Throughout the month of March, GCM highlighted the benefits of its Meals on Wheels program and asked the community to get involved by donating time and funds.
In total, $370,250 is being granted to 258 local Meals on Wheels programs and two Meals on Wheels America-affiliated state associations based on their March for Meals efforts. GCM will use the $500 to purchase food for the program. The organization spends about $1,400 each weekday to feed about 350 people.
“The March for Meals grant program is our way of recognizing local programs for bolstering the dynamic and effective partnership between Meals on Wheels and the businesses, organizations, governments and volunteers who provide critical support within their communities,” said Meals on Wheels America President and CEO Ellie Hollander.
