Gigi Smith, R.N., Ph.D., selected to serve as associate provost for Education Innovation and Student Life
February 27, 2020Gigi Smith, R.N., Ph.D., received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York; Master of Science in Nursing degree in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing from Columbia University in New York, New York; and her post-master’s certificate as a pediatric nurse practitioner and Ph.D. in Nursing Science from MUSC.
Smith’s program of pediatric epilepsy research has focused on self- and family management, caregiving and behavioral health correlates. She is also interested in the epidemiological patterns, co-morbidities and health-related outcomes of epilepsy. In addition, Smith has focused on strategic education offerings to meet current health care issues, including telehealth, palliative care and substance misuse. She is project director of the education and training program grant “Impacting At-risk Populations through Multi-modal Training of Nursing and Medical Students in Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral lo Treatment” (SBIRT), a grant funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). With additional funding from the Duke Endowment, opioid education and training have been added to this program.
In her new role as associate provost for Education Innovation and Student Life, Smith will report directly to Lisa Saladin, PT, Ph.D., executive vice president for Academic Affairs and provost. Smith will have two primary divisions reporting to her: the Division of Educational Innovation, which includes the Center for Academic Excellence, Office of Interprofessional Education and Office of Instructional Technology and Faculty Resources; and the Division of Student Life, which includes the Wellness Center, Counseling and Psychological Services and Student Programs and Student Diversity.
