Girl Scout Cookie Program Sales Begin January 11

January 7, 2013

GREENVILLE, SC – January 7, 2013 – The annual Girl Scout CookieProgram, the $790 million, largest girl-led business in the country, begins door-to-door sales on Friday, January 11 and ends January 27.  The sales dates at local retail locations are weekends from February 22 –March 17.  New this year will be a unique cookie, updated box designsand expanded eco-packaging.

Making its debut as a new cookie isthe tropical-flavored Mango Crème.  This crispy vanilla coconut cookiewith mango-flavored crème filling has all the nutrient benefits ofeating cranberries, pomegranates, oranges, grapes, and strawberries.  The seven other returning flavors are Caramel deLites, Lemonades, PeanutButter Pattie, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Shortbread, Thanks-A-Lot andThin Mints.

For the first time since 1999, all cookie boxes willhave a new look.  The iconic package showcases the Gold Award which isthe highest award a Girl Scout can earn, and the five financial literacyand entrepreneurship skills that the Girl Scout Cookie Program teachesgirls:  goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.  These are all important ingredients in the GirlScout Leadership Experience.

An additional change will also benoticed in the Lemonades new eco-friendly packaging.  These cookies joinThanks-A-Lot that were taken “out of the box” in 2010 and packed infilm-overwrapped trays.  This single change saves tons of paperboardfrom going into America’s waste stream and, because more cookies can beshipped on a truck, an estimated several thousand gallons of diesel fuelis saved each cookie season.

Our South Carolina-Mountains toMidlands council benefits from the cookie sales program because 100% ofthe proceeds from the $3.50 per box cost remain within the counciljurisdiction. These proceeds help underwrite troop activities andexpenses, girl programming, camperships, membership assistance, programdevelopment, training opportunities and girl-focused propertyimprovements.

When girls choose to use their cookie proceeds topurchase materials for a community action leadership project, then thecommunity benefits.  Examples of this are often seen in renovations andbeautification projects at local schools, churches and children’scenters.

Customers can once again choose the option topurchase cookies for deployed, overseas U.S. troops.  The Cookies forSoldiers program works by cookie customers designating all, or aportion, of their purchase to this program.  Cookie ordering anddistribution is handled by the Girl Scouts.  Shipping is arranged andfinanced by the local chapters of the Blue Star Mothers of America.
