Zoo Joins the Herd to Help Save African Elephants

COLUMBIA, SC –  Guests visiting Riverbanks Zoo and Garden tomorrowTuesday, August 12, are encouraged to Go Grey in honor of World Elephant Day.
Riverbanks is among more than 100 zoos nationwide that have partnered with 96 Elephants—a global campaign to protect African elephants and ban the sale of ivory. Started by the Wildlife Conservation Society, 96 Elephants is named for the number of elephants killed in Africa each day.
Special activities and presentations bringing awareness to World Elephant Day will be taking place at the Zoo tomorrow from 9am to 3pm. Guests also are encouraged to wear gray when visiting the park.

Tomorrow also is another Toucan Tuesday at Riverbanks. The summer-long food drive has already generated more than 5,500lbs.of food for Harvest Hope Food Bank. Each Tuesday, through August 26, guests will receive pay-one-price admission with a donation of two cans of food to Harvest Hope. Donation bins are located at both the Zoo and Garden entrances.
For 40 years, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has connected individuals, families and groups with the world’s wildlife and wild places. Riverbanks is a special purpose district governed by the Riverbanks Park Commission, which consists of seven members, two appointed by Richland County Council, two by Lexington County Council, two by the City of Columbia, and one jointly by the three entities. It is the mission of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden to foster appreciation and concern for all living things. Riverbanks Zoo is located at 500 Wildlife Parkway, Columbia, SC 29210. The Botanical Garden entrance is located at 1300 Botanical Parkway, West Columbia, SC 29169. The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas day.
