Greenville Tech partnership helps tax preparers meet new requirements
August 2, 2010GREENVILLE, SC – August 2, 2010 – In January, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced results of a six-month study of the tax return preparer industry, which proposed new registration, testing and continuing education for tax return preparers.
With more than 80 percent of American households using a tax preparer or tax software to help them prepare and file their taxes, higher standards for the tax return preparer community are designed to enhance protections and service for taxpayers, increase confidence in the tax system and result in greater compliance with tax laws over the long term.
The new requirements include successfully completing 15 hours of continuing professional education annually and passing a competency exam, tentatively scheduled to launch in June 2011.
Greenville Technical College has established a partnership with The Income Tax School to make tax education courses and seminars available to Upstate tax preparers so they will be in compliance with the new IRS standards.
Courses offered by The Income Tax School are developed by practicing tax professionals and use real life scenarios to teach practical applications.
Over 40 courses are offered online for students including employees at tax, accounting, and financial services firms.
Given the comprehensive changes that will soon be affecting paid tax preparers in our state, a partnership between Greenville Technical College Corporate and Career Development and The Income Tax School provides the college with a cost effective and time saving method of assisting tax professionals in our local workforce with career training and continuing education, says Anne Doyle, program manager for Corporate and Career Development at Greenville Tech.
