GWB Attorneys Lead the Way in Participation on the South Carolina Bar’s iCivics Day

GREENVILLE, SC – Gallivan, White and Boyd, P.A. (GWB) attorneys recently took part in the South Carolina Bar’s Third Annual iCivics Day. As members of the SC Bar’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD), GWB attorneys volunteered to travel to local schools to promote the educational project designed to teach students about civics and inspire them to be active participants and leaders in the country’s democratic system. Judges from the S.C. Circuit Court and S.C. Court of Appeals also joined YLD attorneys in making these presentations. Each presentation was composed of an informational slideshow that included topics such as:
- The importance of democracy,
- Separation of powers and federalism, and
- Individual rights and the Bill of Rights
Following the slideshow, the students participated in interactive games as well as a question and answer session testing their knowledge.
More than 2300 students and 65 attorneys from the Young Lawyers Division took part in iCivics Day across South Carolina. GWB led all law firms with the most participating lawyers. Attorneys Amity Edmonds, Batten Farrar, Walker Miller, Kyle White, and law clerks Adam Stovall and TJ Twehues all presented to local elementary and middle school students in Greenville and Columbia. Additionally, GWB attorney and iCivics Co-Chair Lindsay Joyner presented to 400 children in Simpsonville, South Carolina. Joyner stated, “iCivics is designed to provide children with an interactive and fun way to learn about civics and how our government works, and the YLD is excited to sponsor the third annual iCivics Day this year.” Joyner continued, “The SC Bar YLD was the first group in the nation to coordinate a program of this nature and with the help of our generous volunteers, we hope the impact of iCivics Day will extend far beyond the classroom and spur more conversations in the home about being an informed citizen.”

The South Carolina Bar, which has a membership of more than 15,000 lawyers, is dedicated to advancing justice, professionalism and understanding of the law. The Young Lawyers Division includes all members of the SC Bar under age 36 and those with less than five years membership.
