Health Sciences South Carolina names Kenneth R. Deans, Jr. as Chief Executive Officer

COLUMBIA, SC – Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC) has named Kenneth R. Deans, Jr. as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the nation’s first statewide health research organization that includes South Carolina’s largest research universities and health systems. Deans joins HSSC from Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. His most recent role with Chesapeake was serving as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
Deans replaces former President, Jay Moskowitz, PhD, who returned last July to lead Health Sciences South Carolina on an interim basis as the Board of Directors embarked on a national search for a new CEO and president.
Deans brings a tremendous background of over 27 years of workplace experience, with 20 specifically focused on advancing healthcare IT in research-oriented as well as traditional health systems, including the last 13 years serving in “c-level” roles in complex market places. He has a successful record in leading collaborations with other health systems. Deans, in his role, was a constant collaborator with researchers.
Since 2004, HSSC has focused on improving the health status of South Carolinians through collaborative research and health system improvement. From the beginning, HSSC’s strength has been its ability to convene diverse organizations and foster collaboration toward achieving the vision of a healthier South Carolina. HSSC members include Clemson University, MUSC, and USC with its medical schools in Columbia and Greenville; along with AnMed Health, MUSC Health, McLeod Health, Palmetto Health, Self Regional Healthcare, and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System.
