Hispanic Heritage Month celebration set for October 12th

October 7, 2024

The Latino Community Development and Richland School District Two are observing National Hispanic Heritage Month with a Carnaval del Barrio or Neighborhood Carnival. This celebration of the rich culture and heritage of Hispanic nations will take place Saturday, October 12, 2024, beginning at 10 a.m. at R2i2, the Richland Two Institute of Innovation located at 763 Fashion Drive, Columbia. Throughout the event, there will be music, dancing, and entertainment.

Dr. Helen N. Grant, Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer says this event is for everyone.  “Richland Two’s student population is 13.3 percent Hispanic, which is slightly higher from last year. Our goal is to provide opportunities for students, families, and community members to experience some of the rich culture and heritage of the Hispanic community and to educate through those experiences,” said Dr. Grant.

Country flags will be displayed while music from that nation is played. Schools and international teachers are working collaboratively in small groups to design table displays of pictures, artifacts, and more that represent the heritage, history, and culture of a particular nation. Following the flag parade, attendees can visit the exhibits, games and food trucks on-site. The event is free and open to the public. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.

National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15th through October 15th annually.
