Hobcaw Barony plans outdoor winter events this February with Trail Rides and Camellias & Tea

February 18, 2020

Belle Baruch began purchasing sections of Hobcaw Barony from her father in 1935, and soon after began creating an outdoor oasis by building a house and stable complex, Bellefield Plantation, a stable cottage, and a small airport hangar. With two signature events this February, Hobcaw Barony will welcome guests to experience and see the beauty that Baruch created.

Camellias & Tea at Bellefield
Camellias & Tea at Bellefield will be held on February 26, 27, and 28 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. Participants will spend a portion of the day experiencing a walking tour of the grounds of Bellefield Plantation, which will conclude with demonstrations of air-layering and camellia waxing. Sip green camellia tea, as well as a Charleston black tea, on the terrace where Baruch entertained President Franklin Roosevelt and other prominent figures.

“Belle Baruch enjoyed riding horses on her property, especially in the winter when camellias were in bloom and the rye grass was flourishing,” explained Richard Camlin, coordinator of adult education at Hobcaw Barony. “She grew, propagated and competed with many varieties of camellias that are still growing in her yard today, and we are excited to invite our community to share the same experiences and joy that Belle did.”

Trail Ride With Your Horse at Hobcaw Barony
On three consecutive Saturdays, horse enthusiasts are invited to explore the tract during Trail Ride with Your Horse at Hobcaw Barony. On February 29, March 7 and March 14, individuals of all ages are encouraged to bring their own horse and ride on designated trails throughout the property.

Riders will have the experience of exploring the 16,000 acres and will be provided with maps that highlight points of interest. Check-in time runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and all horses, trailers and their owners must depart by 5 p.m. Registration and waiver forms must be completed and received by Hobcaw Barony at least three days before each event. Each event is $35, and reservations are required. To reserve your spot, visit HobcawBarony.org.
