How Arnold Palmer branded his business
March 19, 2018By Jerry Bellune,
Arnold Palmer and his associates were brainstorming a signature logo they could use on clothing, golf clubs and other products. What they came up with was too commonplace or was already trademarked.
Arnie took a break and, as it was raining outside, saw a woman get out of her car and pop open a multi-colored umbrella.
He dashed back to the meeting.
“What about an umbrella?” Arnie asked.
What kind of umbrella? A multi-colored golf umbrella. But what if someone had already trademarked it?
Their lawyers investigated and found no one had trademarked that umbrella.
Arnie’s new logo became legendary.
A major reason for the logo’s popularity was Palmer himself. He understood the importance of building and maintaining a brand.
He sported the umbrella logo on everything he wore everywhere he went. So did his associates on their clothing and passed out umbrella lapel pins.
What can you do with what Arnie did?
