How To Actually Enjoy The Weekend
March 2, 2017By Brian Maynor
March is here, and with it comes spring weather, pollen and the irresistible urge to be outside in spite of it.
While our winter was pretty mild, it’s not the same as spring. From the budding and blooming flowers to the underlying theme of rebirth and renewal, we are meant to enjoy and embrace spring and the new life it holds, but you can’t do that if you’re trapped by work and stress.
Here are a few tricks to start using now that will help you reclaim your weekend so you can actually enjoy them again:
1. Just say ‘no’ to pressure. Whether it’s from the expectation of your family that weekends belong to them, or work demanding emails, messages and phone calls be answered and responded to promptly at all times, it’s all pressure that can crush the joy right out of the weekend. It’s okay to say ‘no’. Sure it may be bumpy for a while establishing your new boundaries, but you and your happiness are worth the fight.
2. Be in the moment. It may be a bit naïve and presumptions to think you can carve out an entire two days off the grid, so that makes recognizing and enjoying the time you do have all the more important, and it starts with being present. Acknowledge the bits of time you do have to relax instead of constantly checking your phone. There are a few people I know who find this concept completely foreign so I suggested they actually schedule blocks of time for not checking their phone. Surprisingly if it’s on their calendar it’s like permission to unplug and they don’t feel guilty about it. Plus it helps that they know it’s a finite amount of time.
3. Let go of negative people. We all have negative people in our lives. Just think about the phone calls you avoid. These are not bad people; they just tend to suck the joy out of your life by constantly focusing on themselves and their problems. They take a lot from you, like your energy; your time and your happiness, without ever giving anything back. Cut the cord. Your time is valuable; especially when it’s on the weekend. So don’t waste a second of it on anything that doesn’t bring you benefit or joy.
Whether you partake in Lenten season traditions or not, why not use this benchmark as a time to establish new routines that will help you enjoy the season. After all, who doesn’t like the idea of giving up work?
