How to know your business is great
August 14, 2017By Jerry Bellune
Our friend Ruth King passed along this story.
Bob Barnes owns a heating business in Boise, Idaho.
In six years he doubled sales and doubled profits.
He also grew a great company culture.
One of Bob’s service technicians shot himself.
He was an only child and his work was his life.
Fellow workers wanted to help his mother.
This wasn’t Bob’s idea but his technicians’.
His mother needed help cleaning his apartment.
All of them volunteered to do it for her.
They showed up in their personal vehicles.
They did it in about an hour one evening after work.
Bob did not order it. It was all volunteer.
In his obituary, his mother wrote about this.
She wrote how her son loved working there.
When tragedy strikes, you learn a lot about each other.
What are Bob’s great company-building secrets?
Communication, focus, and profit sharing.
Everyone knows:
• What their job is and how to do it effectively.
• How what they do affects their customers.
• How their work impacts company profits.
They know the good, bad, and ugly.
They fanatically focus on customers and numbers.
They know the customers write their paychecks.
They know how their work will be measured.
Every month performance is reviewed.
Ruth and Bob go over the financial statements.
Everyone gets a piece of the profits.
They get half of their bonus right before busy seasons.
They work hard for an even bigger share of profits.
Do you have a great company? How do you know?
